BAX DISCOGRAPHY

Compiled by Graham Parlett (February 2017)

This is a revised and updated version of the discography that first appeared as Appendix 3 in A Catalogue of the Works of Sir Arnold Bax (OUP, 1999). There are three sections:

I. RECORDINGS OF BAX’S MUSIC

II. RECORDINGS OF BAX PLAYING THE PIANO

III. RECORDINGS OF BAX SPEAKING

The first two sections list all commercial recordings known to have been available for purchase together with samplers and free discs given away with magazines. Performances that are due to be recorded or have been recorded recently but not yet issued are marked ‘forthcoming’. The arrangement is alphabetical by title (ignoring articles and numerals) with recordings listed in chronological order of original issue, as far as can be ascertained. Details comprise the names of the performers, the record company or label, the type of carrier (tape cassette, compact disc, etc.), and the record numbers. In addition to standard abbreviations (movt. for movement, sop. for soprano, va. for viola, etc.), the following are used:

BR Blu-ray (for film soundtrack)

CD Compact disc

CD-R Compact disc-recordable (commercial transfer)

DVD Digital versatile (or video) disc (for film soundtrack)

EP Extended-play, seven-inch microgroove disc (45 rpm)

SD-10 Shellac, ten-inch disc (78 rpm)

TC Tape cassette

TP Tape (seven-inch reel to reel)

USB Universal serial bus flash drive (memory stick)

VC Video cassette (for film soundtrack)

Performances recorded at public concerts or from broadcasts are indicated by ‘live rec.’ or ‘off-air rec.’, and all recordings are stereophonic unless designated (m) for monaural or, in three instances, (m/st) for mono recordings electronically reprocessed to give a stereo effect (RCA Pickwick/Camden and early 1970s Decca Eclipse labels only). At the time of writing (February 2017), the works that have been commercially recorded most often are the Elegiac Trio (twenty-five versions, including two arrangements), Clarinet Sonata (twenty-three versions), Tintagel (seventeen), Fantasy Sonata (sixteen), and Viola Sonata (fourteen). No attempt has been made to indicate current availability. I am grateful to Christopher Hills for correcting mistakes and pointing out some omissions.

The Gramophone is on the whole a ghastly invention . . .’

(Arnold Bax writing to May Harrison in 1929.)

II. RECORDINGS OF BAX PLAYING THE PIANO

(1) [Two songs]: In a letter to Harriet Cohen of 16 September 1921, Bax wrote: ‘This afternoon I have to go to some place in the City to play two of my songs with Dorothy [Moulton] into the Gramophone. This is a distinct bore, but I shall escape as soon as possible.’ No trace of this recording has been found.

(2) Cradle Song and Rann of Exile: In 1926 HMV issued a recording of these two songs sung by Anne Thursfield ‘supported by a superb piano accompaniment, the name of the player being—rather underservedly, in my opinion—omitted from the label.’ (The Courier [Dundee], 17 February 1926, p. 7.) Could the pianist have been Bax?

(3) Cradle Song: According to www.charm.rhul.ac.uk (AHRC Research Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music), Bax accompanied the soprano Carmen Hill in a recording of this song made for HMV at Hayes (‘room 1/room 2’) on 13 December 1923. Record No. Bb 3966-1 and 2. No such disc seems to have been issued.

(4) Bax: Sonata for viola and piano: Lionel Tertis (va.), Arnold Bax (pf.). Columbia SD: WAX 4949−54 (m) [not issued]; Pearl LP: GEMM 201 (m); CD: GEMM CD 9918 (m); Biddulph CD: BID80216-2 (‘Lionel Tertis: The Complete Columbia Recordings 1924–33’); Heritage CD: HTGCD261 (‘The Art of Lionel Tertis’). This was recorded on 27 May 1929, evidently with some trepidation: ‘I have to record my viola sonata with Tertis to-morrow (Oh help!!)’ (from a letter to May Harrison).

(5) Delius: Violin Sonata No. 1: May Harrison (vn.), Arnold Bax (pf.). HMV SD: C 1749−50 (m); Pearl CD: GEMM CD 9436-8 (m); Claremont CD: CD GSE 78-50-47 (m); Symposium CD: Symposium 1140 (m); Harmonia Mundi CD: APR 7017 (m) (The Auer Legacy, vol. 3). Recorded on 1 and 26 June 1929.

(6) Delius: Violin Sonata No. 3: May Harrison (vn.), probably Arnold Bax (pf.). Symposium CD: Symposium 1075 (m). This was a private recording dating from about 1937 found amongst May Harrison’s effects. The labels on the original discs do not give the performers’ names, but on hearing the recording over fifty years later Eric Fenby had no hesitation in identifying the pianist as Bax, who had played the piano part at its first performance, on 6 November 1930 at the Wigmore Hall. If the pianist is not Bax, it may be Charles Lynch.
